Professional profileMr Ahmed El-Amir



 qualified from the Charing Cross Hospital and St Mary's Hospital in London and began his interest in ophthalmology and retinal disorders under the mentorship of Professor Bird in the Professorial Unit of Moorfields Eye Hospital. He went on to gain a commendation from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists for the Duke-Elder undergraduate prize in ophthalmology. Mr El-Amir was then selected to commence the prestigious specialist surgical training in Moorfields where he was selected to be Head of House, where he continued his interest in the medical and surgical treatment of retinal disorders. He went on to complete his registrar and senior registrar training in the Oxford School of Ophthalmology where he gained his Advanced Training, approved by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, in surgical treatment of retinal disorders (vitreo-retinal surgery) as well as the latest techniques in small-incision cataract surgery. Mr El-Amir was appointed in 2010 to run a joint vitreo-retinal service with the team at Royal Berkshire Hospital. With his first year in post Mr El-Amir has been successful in committing to training senior advanced trainees in vitreo-retinal surgery approved by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He published this experience in 'Advances in Ophthalmology' in 2012, in a chapter voted the best chapter by the editors. Mr El-Amir continues with a vitreo-retinal surgical and medical practice at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, in particular specialising in complex conditions requiring dedicated long term care. He is now a Consultant Ophthalmic and Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon at CircleReading and the Royal Berkshire Hospital NHS Trust. He is also the Lead Consultant in charge of paediatric ophthalmic screening for, and the treatment of, retinopathy of prematurity for Windsor. Mr El-Amir is the chair of clinical governance at the Prince Charles Eye Unit, Windsor. Personal profileAhmed was born in Colorado and raised in London. He is a keen sportsman, playing competitive non-league football with background experience from the Tottenham Academy and Senior Southern and Conference Football. He was the top goal scorer for his medical school winning the 'double' of the Hospitals Cup and University Cup. Mr El-Amir has worked over the past five years with the University of Oxford to establish the epidemiological data for the whole of England for vitrectomy surgery and retinal detachment in order to understand these conditions better.
